What I Really Learned in Med School

  S o, I am all moved into my dorm. It’s nicer than I thought – it has the set-up of an actual apartment as opposed to feeling like student housing. I love that my building sits on a hill because it gives me a great view of the town below as well as the ocean and the mountains. I also love that I am in the newer building and that my roommates are all girls. After moving in, we went for a walk down to see the university itself. We ran into Nation, the IT guy for Saba University, and he was nice enough to give us a mini-orientation. He talked to us about the importance of discipline you need to have to succeed in the program and also how important it is to have a strong support system. He let us into the testing center and into the main classroom so we could get a feel of where we want to sit on our first day. He answered any questions we had and it was great to get a feel of the campus. My newest friend Brenda, who I have spent the past couple days with, happens to know ...

We made it! 6 suitcases 5 airports 4 flights 3 days 2 people 1 dream later... We survived goodbyes, a blizzard, a power outage, and all the other usual challenges that come with traveling. We were treated with great food (including a waffle breakfast), great views (see photos), and even fireworks on our first night (new years day). And of course the trip was made much easier with my dad as a travel companion. This post comes to you from the bench outside the reception office at the hotel on my iPod touch... Welcome to my blog family & friends! I decided to start blogging to keep the people close to me informed about what I am up to. I'm not sure if I will have anything interesting to report in the midst of classes/studying, but I am giving it a shot. At this point, the combination of loans, visas, tuition fees, medical supplies, flights - and so much more that I didn't realise was part of this process - is somewhat overwhelming, but I am finally looking forward to take off in a mere 11 days. The common question I keep getting is if I'm nervous, but I can't say that I am just yet. Christmas activities and working full-time (plus overtime) have been welcome distractions. I anticipate that it will be hard to leave, but that is simply because I know I will miss certain people and I definitely don't think that is abnormal or unexpected. What I'm looking forward to the most is seeing the island itself, starting the Gross Anatomy course, and meeting some like-mi...
